Slow down and enjoy life

Slow down and enjoy life

October 01, 20225 min read

Are you finding yourself flat out every day and it seems like there just isn’t enough time to get everything done and make time for yourself too? Are you trying desperately to get through everything on your to do list before resting and doing something nice for yourself by going away in a couple of months? Are you not setting boundaries for yourself and end up taking on too much, causing overwhelm and resentment? Are you always putting others needs before your own? If this sounds like you, I can tell you from personal experience that this pattern isn’t sustainable. Putting yourself on the backburner all the time will lead to exhaustion, burnout and some serious health issues.

Life is here to be lived and enjoyed yet so many of us get caught up being busy all the time and forget how to just Be and be present in the moment. We get caught up in the responsibilities of Life and forget what lights us up, what makes us feel good and breathes life into us. This is not something to beat yourself up over as it is so easy to slip into this routine. And the more we think we don’t have enough time, the less time we have and the cycle continues. It is like a rollercoaster, sometimes we are up and things are going well and at other times we hit a dip and need to get back on track. It takes a conscious effort to make small changes and slow down to restore some balance but it is possible. Everything is possible. All it takes is the willingness to make a small change and consistent action so that it becomes a habit.

I recently realised I was stuck in a cycle that wasn’t serving me. Every morning I would drag myself out of bed and try and psyche myself up for the day, hoping I would be able to get through my list and try and have some time to do something nice for myself. Before I knew it I would be getting back into bed at night, thinking how tired I felt and I would have to try again tomorrow as I hadn’t touched my list but I was busy all day. It felt like groundhog day. The problem was my mindset wasn’t shifting and I was constantly affirming to myself that I never had enough time to get everything done. And that is exactly what I got. The power of your mind is incredible.
What your mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve. And what you tell yourself all the time will be granted. Your thoughts and words create your experiences. So if you are constantly telling yourself that you are tired all the time (something I was doing), that is exactly what you will be. I knew I needed to make some changes to restore balance as life seemed so busy all the time but I didn’t feel fulfilled.

Some changes I made included going to bed earlier so that I could get up a little earlier to read something inspiring and positive. After getting my kids set up with their home ed, I would give myself half an hour to have a cacao, use my essential oils, listening to some soothing music and get centred and present, recharging myself. I tuned into what I needed and getting into nature was one thing I needed. So I went walking in woods on the weekend. Doing these things has helped me to get out of Overwhelm and snapping at my family, that I felt creeping in again. When you do things for yourself, you top up your reserves so that when you hit a little bump, you can handle it without flying off the handle. Allow this to be a work in progress as some things may work and some won’t, tweak and adjust and go with the flow.

I encourage you to ponder
what makes you feel good, what do you enjoy doing, what revives you and energises you? And do more of that. It doesn’t have to be big things, start small. Create a daily ritual which could be as simple as sitting quietly with a cuppa when you get home at the end of the day and give yourself 5 minutes to just Be and breathe. If you enjoy bathing, make it a ritual by lighting some candles, play some gentle music to help you unwind before bed, use essential oils or give yourself a foot massage.

Why are you waiting to take care of yourself and enjoy your Life?
What is stopping you?
Are you putting your Life on hold until you achieve something in the future?
Do you feel you don’t deserve time for yourself?
Do you need to make sure that everyone else’s needs are met before you think about yourself?
Do you feel guilt at doing something for yourself?
Have you lost touch with what you actually enjoy doing?

Reconnect with that light in you, you are here to shine your light in the world and there is only one of you. Make a decision today to nurture yourself and care for yourself like you would a dear friend. Start enjoying and appreciating every moment, there’s no time like the present. Why wait!

What will you do to slow your life down so you can start enjoying each moment?

I love getting feedback from you. Let me know what you are struggling with and if this has resonated with you and is something you need to work on so I can better support you.
